2018 ATC Grand Prix

The Asheville Track Club’s Grand Prix competition is one of the best around with over $5,000 in cash prizes awarded annually. Points are given based on your participation and speed in the races we select for the year. Compete against other track club members in your gender, division and age group. Run in as few as 5 of our selected races (3 races for kids and 80+) to qualify for an age group award, 10 for a chance at an overall award. This competition is exciting, challenging and rewarding. Race with your friends and meet new ones. Select your races, work on a strategy and most importantly…. Have Fun!

Are you currently a track club member?  To participate in the competition you will need to be an ATC member. It is easy to sign up and there are so many benefits to membership.  (If you aren’t already a member or need to renew for the year, please click  here first. Then return to this page to complete the web form for the Grand Prix below.)

Current ATC members please register to participate in the Grand Prix  so we can track your results in the races.  Or you may email me directly with : your full name, email address and age on 6/1/18. Contact  Sherry.  You can sign up for the Grand Prix any time during the year but we will only score the races you run in after you register here.

Race #8 APRIL 7, 2018 Black Mountain Greenway Challenge 5k/10k (10k ONLY) The Black Mountain Greenways Commission and Pisgah Brewing invite you to the 11th Annual Greenway Challenge 5k/10k race. This race starts and finishes at Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain, NC. All proceeds from this race will benefit The Black Mountain Greenway Commission. The Commission is leading the way to more and more Greenways around Black Mountain. All runners will receive a race T-shirt. Please come join us for a great run and EARN your Pisgah Brew and your own Pisgah pint glass at the FINISH. (+1 BONUS POINT)

Race # 9 APRIL 15, 2018 Falafel 5k According to you and the Mountain Xpress, the Falafel 5K is one of WNC’s BEST road races! Come on out and join us as a runner, walker, volunteer or cheerer. The race is chip timed and well organized. Every runner gets a coupon for a falafel sandwich at Congregation Beth Israel’s Cafe Israel event. LOTS of prizes and fun raffles too. This is a great community building event through the gorgeous Norwood Park neighborhood.

Race # 10 APRIL 21st, 2018 Frostbreaker 5k This run was created to help ease the transition for Hall Fletcher Elementary’s children and families to a traditional school calendar from a year-round schedule. Since the extra 6 weeks of summer will be challenging for many families, the funds will be used to implement summer programs such as weekly fresh food initiatives, camp scholarships, the FEAST garden project and much-needed new gym equipment.

Race # 11 MAY 5, 2018 Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon and Four Mile (HALF ONLY) Outstanding scenery and spectacular recreational opportunities make the Gateway to the Smokies Half Marathon and 4 mile run two of the most popular running events west of Asheville, NC.  Located picturesque Waynesville, NC, the challenging and family friendly event winds runners through Waynesville and its neighborhoods before heading out along Plott Creek and then finishing back downtown.  Downtown Waynesville is 2,752 feet above sea level and is located in a valley surrounded by 6,000-foot mountain peaks. (+2 BONUS POINTS)

Race # 12 May 12, 2018   Cradle 2 Grave 30k   Come enjoy trail running in the very place where forestry and conservation in America began. The Cradle to race starts and finishes at the Cradle of Forestry, located just south of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Sliding Rock. You will run out the lush Pink Beds trail past fields of wildflowers and beaver ponds, while crossing creeks on bridges and rocks. The course will have you continue on along forest service roads in the heart of Pisgah National Forest, and climb up to one of the most unvisited and spectacular views of pristine forest land available. The return trip will utilize several different trails, each with their own unique topography, beauty, and characteristics. After race lunch and entertainment will be provided. Remain at the Cradle of Forestry after the race to enjoy the Forest Discovery Center with the entire family. (+3 BONUS POINTS)

Race # 13 May 26, 2018 Mountain Sports Festival 5k  (Festival Frenzy 5k)The free festival showcases the terrain, environment, and unique culture of Asheville, NC and the surrounding mountains. The Mountain Sports Festival is organized by a volunteer group of community oriented citizens dedicated to providing a well balanced series of events and music that encourage participation on all levels.

Race #14  JULY 4, 2018 Firecracker 5k  Join us July 4, 2018, for the 24th Annual Firecracker 5k Run to provide scholarships for some of our North Buncombe students planning to attend a college or technical school. The course begins at PNC Bank on Weaverville Boulevard, turns right onto Main Street and continues through residential neighborhoods and parts of beautiful downtown Weaverville, concluding back at PNC Bank.

Race #15  JULY 28, 2018 Highland Brewing Night Flight The Highland Brewing Night Flight is everyone’s favorite twilight race and back for its fourth year, better than ever! The 4.5-mile East Asheville course will take runners through the Asheville Golf Course, through the Beverly Hills neighborhood (where you will be showered with cheers from the residents) and past the WNC Nature Center before finishing back at the brewery.

Race #16  August 4, 2018  LEAF Art Dash  The course starts and finishes in Downtown Asheville by French Broad Chocolate Lounge near the monument on Saturday 9am to kick off LEAF Downtown. The run begins Saturday 9am with a chip-timed 5k for individual runners.  The course traveled through the city’s downtown and surrounding area.  At the starting line, runners or families will get warmed up artfully and with a fun LEAF groove. Along the race, inspiring volunteers assist and guide runners, and Roaming Artist spice up the route with playful puppets, costumes, and artful moments.

Race #17  September 1, 2018  Apple Festival 8k  The Henderson County Chamber of Commerce presents the Pardee Apple Festival 8K, Chamber Challenge 5K and Chick-fil-A Mini Moo Mile on Saturday, September 2nd. This certified course winds through scenic Hendersonville and Laurel Park, starting and ending at the Pardee Medical Office Building, on the hospital’s main campus in Hendersonville

Race #18  September 5, 2018  $5 5k charity race for Habitat for Humanity      Just come out to Fletcher Park on Wednesday 9-5, pay $5, run/walk and receive 1 GP bonus point added to your total score! All proceeds will go to Habitat For Humanity. Prediction Fun Run = Tell us your predicted finish time at registration. No watches/phones allowed during the race. Closest predictions to actual finish times win! This will be a two loop, flat course.
Registration at Red Foot Rx Tent in last parking area starting at 5:30PM.
Suggested minimum $5 donation at registration. Race starts at 6:30PM.  Be sure to check out the whole $5 5k series that runs March 7th, 2018 through October 3rd, 2018. (+1 BONUS POINT only)

Race #19  SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 Rock the Quarry Trail Challenge 5k Locally owned and operated Grove Stone & Sand Company is proud to partner with presenting sponsor Carolina Cat to host the 10th annual Rock the Quarry Trail Challenge 5K and Kids Fun Run in the heart of the Swannanoa Valley. Rock the Quarry 5K Challenge is a foot race with a mission to bring our community together to celebrate good health in our beautiful surroundings while supporting our neighbors. All proceeds from the event benefit Grove Stone’s neighbor, the Black Mountain Home for Children, and long-time partner, Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS).

Race #20 OCTOBER 13, 2018 25th Annual Bethel Half Marathon Run along the peaceful, tree-lined backcountry roads of the area made famous by Charles Frazier’s best-selling novel Cold Mountain, the Asheville Track Club-sanctioned Bethel Half Marathon and 5K takes runners along an out-and-back course filled with the changing autumn leaves, the rolling Appalachian mountains in the distance and the Pigeon River that flows near town. (+2 BONUS POINTS)

Race #21 OCTOBER 20, 2018 Thomas Wolfe 8k  is Asheville’s Oldest Race and honors the life of the famed literary author Thomas Wolfe. In his short life, the Asheville native was known for his short stories, works and novellas. The Thomas Wolfe 8k is a fundraiser for the Asheville Track Club and other literacy related nonprofits. (+1 BONUS POINT)

Race #22 OCTOBER 27, 2018 Haunted Half Marathon    Join us if you dare for the 10th annual Haunted Half. Run Amuck with us in Jonesborough, TN – Tennessee’s Oldest Town! (+2 BONUS POINTS)

 Scoring System

1. We have added a new bonus scoring system for distance races.  This is in addition to the normal scoring system. We want to give you credit for running the extra distance. Starting in 2015, You will receive the following bonus points.              ( + 1 point ) for any race that is a 10k – 12k                                                                                 (+ 2 points) for any race that is a 15k to  a half marathon                                                   ( + 3 points) for any race that is over a half marathon in distance

2. We will be honoring the top 5 overall winners in the Men’s and Women’s divisions as well as the top two Masters, top two Grand Masters (age graded) and age groups (3 deep).

3. Discount codes for race registration : We have worked very hard to get ATC members exclusive discounts to the Grand Prix races. These discount codes will be sent in the monthly newsletter. If you are not receiving the newsletter or need the discount code prior to the newsletter going out, please let me know.
